Litter PSA Video

Overview

For this project, I created a motion graphics video in Adobe After Effects centered around the issue of littering and its environmental impact. The goal was to use motion as a storytelling tool, guiding viewers through a narrative that raises awareness and encourages more responsible behavior.

Initially, I explored a concept focused on flowers and nature, but the idea lacked depth and direction. I shifted my focus to a more impactful narrative, highlighting litter as a direct cause of environmental harm. This change allowed me to develop a clearer message and a more compelling visual story.

Role: Motion Designer | Duration: 3 weeks

Research & Concept

The final concept follows the journey of a single water bottle as it moves through different environments, illustrating the consequences of littering. I used the bottle as a visual anchor to create continuity across scenes, allowing the viewer to follow a clear narrative from beginning to end.

A gust of wind acts as a transition device, moving the bottle from frame to frame and creating a sense of flow throughout the video. This approach helped unify the scenes while reinforcing the idea that litter can travel far beyond its original location. To strengthen the message, I incorporated researched facts about littering, encouraging viewers to reflect on its broader environmental impact.

Ideation & Sketches

I began by sketching a storyboard to map out the full sequence of the video. The animation consists of eight frames, including end credits, with each scene building on the narrative progression. The story begins with a person throwing a water bottle on the ground, which is then carried away by wind into different environments. As the bottle moves, it is paired with factual information, shown in polluted spaces like the ocean, and ultimately interacts with wildlife to highlight the consequences of littering. The later frames shift toward a call to action, showing proper disposal and reinforcing the message through text-focused compositions.

Digital Design & Iteration

All visual assets were created in Adobe Illustrator, using my storyboard sketches as a foundation. Each object was designed on its own layer so it could be easily manipulated during the animation process. In After Effects, I animated the project using keyframes, position, and rotation tools to bring the scenes to life. The movement of the water bottle was central to the piece, guiding the viewer through each frame and reinforcing the narrative structure. I also applied techniques, including trim paths, to enhance motion and add visual interest.

To support the visuals, I selected an uplifting, copyright-free music track that aligned with the tone of the video. After importing the audio into After Effects, I adjusted the levels to create a gradual fade-out, preventing the video from ending abruptly.

The addition of sound helped enhance the emotional impact of the piece and created a more engaging viewing experience.

Following critiques, I revisited the animation to refine timing, pacing, and transitions. Making small adjustments to how long elements appeared on screen and how they moved between frames significantly improved the clarity and overall flow of the video.

Final Product

The final video communicates the impact of littering through a clear, narrative-driven motion design. By combining storytelling, animation, and factual information, the piece encourages viewers to reflect on their actions and consider more responsible behaviors.

Outcome

The final video communicates the impact of littering through a clear, narrative-driven motion design. By combining storytelling, animation, and factual information, the piece encourages viewers to reflect on their actions and consider more responsible behaviors.

This project demonstrates my ability to translate static concepts into motion, create cohesive visual narratives, and use animation as a tool for communication.
